The Huddersfield Beginner’s Guide to Mastering Kempo at British Kempo Society

Published on July 7, 2026 | By Sensei Rebecca Kane

Are you looking for a way to get fit, learn how to protect yourself, and join a community that feels like family? If you’re in Huddersfield and have been thinking about trying martial arts, you’re in the right place. Starting something new can be a bit nerve-wracking, especially when it involves things like "striking" or "grappling," but we promise that Kempo is one of the most welcoming and rewarding arts you can find.

In this guide, we’ll walk you through everything you need to know about starting your journey at the British Kempo Society. Whether you are an adult looking for a lifestyle change or a parent wanting to boost your child’s confidence, this is your roadmap to mastering Kempo.

What is Kempo? A Mix of the Best

If you’ve ever looked into martial arts, you’ve probably seen a dozen different names: Karate, Kung Fu, Ju Jitsu, Kickboxing. It can be confusing!

Kempo (sometimes called Shaolin Kempo) is often described as a "hybrid" martial art. It doesn't just stick to one thing. Instead, it takes the best bits from several traditions:

  • Striking: Fast punches and kicks inspired by Karate.
  • Fluidity: The graceful, circular movements of Kung Fu.
  • Grappling: Self-defence techniques like escapes and locks from Ju Jitsu.

At the British Kempo Society, we teach Kempo as a complete system. This means you don’t just learn how to throw a punch; you learn how to move your whole body, how to stay calm under pressure, and how to defend yourself in real-world situations. It’s practical, it’s fun, and it’s a fantastic workout for both your body and your brain.

Why Choose British Kempo Society?

Huddersfield has a few options for fitness, but there is something special about the vibe here at BKS. We aren't just a gym; we are a society. Our focus is on making martial arts accessible to everyone, regardless of their starting fitness level or experience.

A Focus on Community

When you walk through our doors, you aren't just another number in a class. You’re part of a community. We celebrate each other’s wins, whether that’s a child earning their first stripe or an adult mastering a difficult self-defence escape. We believe that martial arts should be a shared journey.

World-Class Instruction

Our classes are led by experienced instructors who live and breathe martial arts. Our founder, Rebecca Kane, is a World Champion and the Head of Weapons Training for the UK and Europe. Along with instructors like Ben Ledwick, our team brings a wealth of knowledge that ensures you’re learning techniques that actually work.

Adult Training: Self-Defence, Fitness, and Stress Relief

Most adults join us for one of three reasons: they want to get fit, they want to feel safer, or they need an outlet for the stress of daily life. Kempo hits all three.

Practical Self-Defence

Let’s be honest: the world can feel a bit unpredictable sometimes. Our adult classes focus heavily on practical self-defence. We don't just teach "movie moves." We teach you how to recognize danger, how to de-escalate a situation, and: if necessary: how to use Kempo techniques to protect yourself and your loved ones. We also integrate elements of Ju Jitsu and Kickboxing to ensure you have a well-rounded skill set.

A Total Body Workout

Forget the treadmill. Kempo is high-intensity interval training (HIIT) without the boredom. In a single hour-long class, you can burn up to 500 calories while building functional strength, flexibility, and coordination. You’ll find yourself muscles you didn't even know you had!

Mental Clarity

There is something about hitting a pad or focusing on a complex combination of movements that clears your mind. For many of our students, the dojo is the one place where they can switch off from work and family responsibilities and just focus on the present moment. It’s the ultimate stress-buster.

Kempo for Kids: Building Confidence and Discipline

As a parent, you want your child to have the tools they need to succeed in life. While Kempo is a great way for kids to burn off energy, the real benefits are much deeper.

Discipline and Respect

From the very first class, children learn the importance of respect: for their instructors, their peers, and themselves. We use a structured belt system that teaches kids the value of setting goals and working hard to achieve them. Seeing the pride on a child's face when they earn a new belt is one of the best parts of our jobs.

Anti-Bullying and Confidence

Bullying is a major concern for many families. We don't teach kids to be "fighters" in the sense of looking for trouble. Instead, we give them the "confidence of a lion." When a child knows they can defend themselves, they carry themselves differently. They stand taller, speak more clearly, and are less likely to be targeted by bullies.

Coordination and Physical Health

In an age of screens and tablets, getting kids moving is more important than ever. Our kids' classes are designed to be fast-paced and engaging, helping children develop their motor skills, balance, and overall fitness in a way that feels like play.

What to Expect in Your First Class

Still feeling a bit nervous? Here is exactly what happens when you show up for your first session at the British Kempo Society in Huddersfield:

  1. The Welcome: You’ll be greeted by one of our friendly instructors (like Sensei Ben or Rebecca). We’ll show you around, introduce you to a few fellow students, and make sure you feel at home.
  2. The Warm-up: We start every class with a thorough warm-up to get your blood pumping and your joints ready for movement.
  3. Basics: For your first few classes, we’ll focus on the fundamentals: basic stances, punches, and blocks. We take things slow to make sure your technique is safe and effective.
  4. Partner Drills: You’ll work with a partner (usually someone with a bit more experience who can help guide you) to practice self-defence drills in a controlled, safe environment.
  5. Cool Down: We finish with a brief cool-down and a moment of reflection on what we’ve learned.

What to wear? Just some comfortable sportswear: leggings or joggers and a t-shirt are perfect. You don't need a formal uniform (gi) until you've decided that Kempo is the right fit for you.
