If you are looking for a practical way to improve your fitness, build confidence, and learn useful self-defence skills, martial arts could be the right choice for you and your family.
At the British Kempo Society, we bring together traditional Kempo, Ju Jitsu, self-defence, weapons training, and kickboxing. Our aim is simple: to help people of all ages grow stronger, more focused, and more confident within a welcoming martial arts community.
Whether you are completely new to training, returning after a break, or looking for your next challenge, there is always something more to learn.
Why Choose Martial Arts for Fitness and Confidence?
Martial arts training gives you more than a workout. Each class can improve your strength, mobility, coordination, balance, and cardiovascular fitness. You also learn how to stay calm, listen carefully, and keep trying when a technique feels difficult.
This makes martial arts suitable for a wide range of people, including:
- Adults who want a more interesting alternative to the gym
- Children who need a positive outlet for energy
- Families who want to train and grow together
- Beginners who have never tried martial arts before
- Existing martial artists who want to expand their knowledge
- Competitors who want to improve their technical skills and conditioning
The progress is gradual. You do not need to be extremely fit or flexible before your first class. Training is adapted to your current ability, allowing you to develop at a safe and manageable pace.
Over time, you may notice that you stand taller, move more confidently, and feel better prepared for everyday challenges. The support of your training partners also creates a strong sense of belonging. You are not working alone; you are part of a community.
Kempo and Ju Jitsu for Practical Self-Defence
Kempo Ju Jitsu combines striking, movement, locks, escapes, throws, control, and traditional martial arts principles. This gives students a broad approach to martial arts and self defense.
Self-defence is not only about fighting. Good training also covers awareness, confidence, communication, distance, decision-making, and knowing when to move away from danger. The safest outcome is often to avoid a confrontation or leave the situation early.
In training, you can practise responses in a controlled environment. This helps you understand how your body moves under pressure while developing better reactions and awareness.
Our About page explains more about the Society’s history and mission. Founded around 2001, the British Kempo Society continues to preserve traditional values while embracing modern training methods and sports science.
That balance matters. Traditional martial arts offer discipline, respect, and a connection to previous generations. Modern coaching helps students train safely and understand how techniques work in real movement.

Kickboxing Training for Beginners and Adults
Kickboxing is an energetic, full-body form of training. It develops footwork, timing, coordination, stamina, balance, and striking technique. Pad work and conditioning drills can also provide an excellent cardiovascular workout.
If you are searching for beginners kickboxing or a kickboxing class for beginners, you may be pleased to know that you do not need previous experience. A good class will teach the foundations step by step, from stance and movement to basic punches, kicks, defensive actions, and combinations.
Kickboxing can be especially useful for people who want:
- A high-energy fitness session
- Better coordination and agility
- Increased strength and stamina
- A practical way to manage stress
- More confidence in their movement
- A structured challenge with clear progression
Adult kickboxing classes can suit many different goals. Some people train to improve their fitness. Others want to learn striking skills, prepare for competition, or add kickboxing to their self-defence training. You can train at your own level while learning alongside people who share your commitment.
For local families and individuals searching online for karate Huddersfield, it is also worth exploring the wider Kempo Ju Jitsu and kickboxing community. Martial arts styles have different traditions and training methods, but the right club should always offer clear coaching, respect, safety, and a welcoming atmosphere.
Martial Arts for Kids: Confidence, Focus, and Respect
Children can gain a great deal from martial arts when lessons are taught in a positive and age-appropriate way.
Martial arts for kids should not focus on aggression. Instead, training can help children understand boundaries, practise self-control, listen to instructions, and develop confidence through regular achievement.
Your child may benefit from:
- Improved balance and coordination
- Better focus and concentration
- Increased confidence in new situations
- Positive physical activity
- Greater self-discipline
- The ability to work respectfully with others
- A stronger understanding of personal safety
Children learn through repetition, games, partner exercises, and achievable challenges. They also learn that progress does not happen instantly. A technique may take time to understand, and that is an important lesson in patience and resilience.
The community aspect is just as valuable. Children train with others, encourage their partners, and learn how to contribute to a respectful group. Parents can see their child develop not just physically, but emotionally and socially too.
Meet the Instructors Behind the Community
The strength of any martial arts organisation comes from its instructors. The British Kempo Society brings together experienced teachers from several disciplines.

Shihan Ben Ledwick
Shihan Ben Ledwick is Head of Kempo Ju Jitsu and one of the key figures in the Society. He travels internationally to promote Kempo and its values, helping connect practitioners and instructors across a wider martial arts community.
Ben’s approach reflects an important part of Kempo: martial arts are not only about physical ability. They are also about discipline, character, respect, and personal development.
His leadership helps create opportunities for students at different levels, from newcomers learning their first techniques to experienced practitioners preparing for advanced training.
Rebecca Kane
Rebecca Kane is a World Champion and Head of Weapons Training for the UK and Europe. Her background includes Filipino martial arts, full-contact stick fighting, K1 kickboxing, and Thai boxing. She has achieved multiple national and international titles and brings a wealth of practical experience to her teaching.
Rebecca is also passionate about helping women and children build resilience and confidence. She offers both online and in-person training, making her expertise accessible to people in different locations and with different training needs.
You can learn more about her work through Rebecca’s personal website, The Dancing Fighter.

The wider British Kempo Society instructors team includes leaders in Kempo Ju Jitsu, kickboxing, Thai boxing, Filipino Martial Arts, Brazilian Ju Jitsu, and other disciplines. This range of experience helps students discover different ways to train and develop.
What Should You Expect from Your First Class?
Starting something new can feel uncomfortable, especially if you have never attended a martial arts club before. You may worry that everyone else will be more experienced or fitter than you.
In a beginner-friendly class, you should be guided through the basics without pressure. Your instructor should explain the purpose of each drill, demonstrate techniques clearly, and help you train safely with a partner.
You can expect a mixture of:
- Warm-ups and mobility exercises
- Technique demonstrations
- Individual practice
- Pad work or partner drills
- Fitness and conditioning exercises
- A cool-down and chance to ask questions
You do not have to be perfect. The goal is to learn, practise, and improve. Your first class is simply the beginning of your journey.
If you are comparing self defence classes, ju jitsu classes, or martial arts for adults, consider speaking to the club before attending. Ask about the class structure, experience levels, safety procedures, and whether you can observe or try a session.
